Original traditional Ukiyo-e woodblock print. [This print is not a modern reproduction]

Type of print : Yakusha-e (Kabuki Actors)

Artist : Utagawa Kunisada Toyokuni III (signed Gototei Kunisada)

Date of publication : Between 1811 and 1841, probably 1838, Edo period

    Censorship Seal : Kiwame

Publisher : Izumiya Ichibei (Marks 180)

    Format : O-Ban Tate-e (approximately 26.5x37cm)

Title : Genkurô Kitsune Kudari, Nakamura Utaemon (descent of the fox Genkurô, actor Nakamura Utaemon)

Subject : Scene from one of the three most famous plays of Kabuki theater: Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura (Yoshitsune and the Thousand Cherry Trees). The famous actor Nakamura Utaemon plays the role of the fox Genkurô holding the Hatsune drum, central element of the play.

Condition : Print in good general condition, traces of old framing, damaged corners. Slightly patinated colors.

🦝 Our opinion : Very pretty pre-1850 print by Kunisada. We love: The actor's "hairy" Kimono representing the fox Genkurô and the weeping cherry blossoms in the upper part. Note the still visible presence of the "Karazuri" relief technique at the level of the cherry blossoms.
