Title:
Mutsu no kuni Chidori no Tamagawa 陸奥国千鳥の玉川
"The Plover River Tamagawa in Mutsu Province"
Subject:
This print by Kuniyoshi depicts a woman on the shore, carrying water buckets suspended from a pole, while plovers (chidori) circle above her. The scene takes place in a landscape in Mutsu Province (present-day Tohoku).
Analysis and Meaning of the Scene:
The work is part of the Japanese poetic tradition of Tamagawa ("jewel rivers"), symbolic places associated with the purity of water, the sound of the current, and melancholy. The Six Tamagawa are famous poetic places in classical Japanese literature, known as utamakura. Chidori no Tamagawa is one of the most well-known themes.
The Symbolism of the Chidori:
The chidori, a small wading bird known in English as the plover, literally means "thousand birds" in Japanese. Always moving in groups, it is considered an auspicious bird. Often associated with the wave motif, the chidori symbolizes courage and determination in the face of natural elements, as well as the ability to overcome life's difficulties.
Condition:
Print in good overall condition for a mid-19th century work.
- Colors very well preserved
- Slight natural patina due to age
- No tears or missing parts
- Small central fold
- A few small holes (see close-up photo)
- Old adhesive tape on the top corners at the back and washi tape on one edge. Absolutely invisible from the front.
🦝 Our opinion:
A sublime work by our favorite master Kuniyoshi. Everything is magnificent, from the bokashi gradation of the sky in Prussian blue, through the waves and plum blossom patterns on this beautiful woman's kimono, to the magnificently depicted chidori in full flight. In our opinion, a masterpiece!
