A major—and undisputed—figure in sōsaku kokeshi, Sansaku Sekiguchi is considered one of the greatest masters of Japanese creative kokeshi.
He is officially certified by the Japanese government as a "Creative Kokeshi Master."
Born in Shibukawa, Gunma Prefecture, he began his career as a painter before training in traditional kokeshi in the 1950s. From 1958, he dedicated himself exclusively to the creation of sōsaku kokeshi, developing an immediately recognizable style.
His work is distinguished by:
- a great formal sobriety,
- peaceful and meditative faces,
- exceptional mastery of volumes and proportions.
Multi-award-winning in Japan—with over 50 kokeshi recognized, including several Prime Minister's Prizes—he is also the only kokeshi master to have his own museum, located in Shibukawa. His work also enjoys international recognition, with works permanently exhibited abroad.
Details
This kokeshi perfectly illustrates Sansaku Sekiguchi's mature aesthetic.
The minimalist and serene face, with delicately closed eyes, emanates a profound sense of calm and introspection.
The massive and enveloping hairstyle, sculpted as a single volume, frames the head with an almost architectural elegance, an emblematic signature of the artist.
The cylindrical body is adorned with precisely engraved chrysanthemum motifs. The wood surface, deliberately left simple, reveals a warm patina acquired over time, reinforcing the contemplative character of the piece.
🦝 We love
An emblematic kokeshi by the great master Sansaku Sekiguchi, we love its style and the very warm color and patina of its wood, a beauty!
