    Description

A very beautiful Ko-Imari plate in Japanese porcelain, produced in Arita, in the former Hizen province.
A piece from the late Edo / early Meiji transition, still very much marked by the Edo taste for refined decorations.

The deep and luminous golden background is decorated with several cherry blossom sakura 桜 trees with winding branches and stylized white flowers, typical of old Imari. The whole is enhanced by large aka-e red medallions.

In the center, a dragon painted in underglaze blue occupies the main medallion. Its design is almost ethereal, bringing movement and beautiful depth to the composition.

The balance between gold, red, blue, and touches of green is remarkable: rich without being overpowering, decorative and very elegant.

Potter's mark: the kanji 富 (tomi or fuku)

On the reverse of the plate is the kanji , meaning "wealth" or "prosperity". This character, painted as a production mark, is attributed to a historical kiln active in Arita under the name Sakaguchi Tomiemon.

    About the mark 富:

Used in the late Edo period and during the Meiji era (circa 1800–1900),
Identified in old books on Japanese porcelain marks (e.g. Bowes, 1882),
Typical of quality craftsmanship, intended for both the local market and export.

This mark adds additional value to this piece, as a trace of a recognized workshop, emblematic of the Arita tradition.

    🦝 Our opinion

A superb Ko-imari plate, perfectly representing the Edo/Meiji transition style. We love the sakura with their hundreds of flowers and the dragon flying in the center!
