This elegant plate, Arita tradition from the former Hizen province (肥前国), illustrates the refinement of Showa porcelain (1950s–1960s). It comes from the workshops of Iwao Engineering Co. with its mark 藍 (Ai), meaning indigo. Its exceptional quality is evident in the fineness of the porcelain, the intensity of the enamels and gilding, and the precision of the Sho Chiku Bai decoration. The Sho Chiku Bai (松竹梅) motif, literally pine, bamboo, plum, symbolizes longevity, resilience, and renewal—an emblematic auspicious trio in Japanese aesthetics.

    🎨 Decoration and techniques

    • Hand-painted Sho Chiku Bai (松竹梅) motif:
      • Pine (松, matsu) in underglaze cobalt blue and gilding.
      • Bamboo (竹, take) in blue and red enamel
      • Plum (梅, ume) in red and gilding
    • Polychrome enamels: blue, red, applied with mastery for vivid tones and a slight gradient on the edges of the motifs.
    • Gilding: kinrande, highlighting the luxuriance of the pine and plum blossoms, illustrating the high-end character of the piece.
    • Blue plum branches on the lower edges of the plate

🉐 Seal on the reverse: 藍 (Ai)

On the back of the plate is a blue underglaze square seal bearing the kanji 藍 (Ai). Attributed to Iwao Engineering Co. and its affiliated workshops in the Arita/Hizen region, used during the period ca 1900–ca 2000.

    🦝 Our opinion:

A jewel from the mid-Showa era, this plate reveals a remarkable level of finish: the subtle gilding on the pine needles adds a luxurious dimension.
