    Origin: Japan, found in Yamaguchi Prefecture.
    Estimated Period: Shōwa Era (circa 1950–1970)
    Material: Rigid molded resin support, finished in genuine Japanese black lacquer (本塗 – hon-nuri) with original label.
    Decorative Techniques:
    • Maki-e (蒔絵) – gold powder painted decoration
    • Taka-maki-e (高蒔絵) – maki-e in slight relief visible on the flowers and foliage
    • Nashiji (梨地) – speckled gold effect inside the box

    Condition: Very good vintage condition – shiny and uniform surface, well-preserved decoration, luminous nashiji interior; slight signs of use, especially on the bottom of the box, but no actual scratches or chips.

    Description

    This Japanese black lacquer box is a fine example of decorative production from the Shōwa era, a period when traditional lacquer techniques adapted to more modern resin supports, designed to last and accompany daily life.

    The decoration depicts ajisai (紫陽花) hydrangeas, emblematic flowers of early Japanese summer and the rainy season. A symbol of delicacy, transition, and ephemeral beauty, the ajisai here is treated with finesse using the maki-e (蒔絵) technique, enhanced with areas of taka-maki-e, where the lacquer gains thickness and relief, especially on the flowers and some leaves.

    The colored pigments blend with gold powder, offering a subtle contrast against the depth of the brilliant black lacquer. Inside, the nashiji (梨地) finish diffuses a discreet golden shimmer, revealing particular care given to details, even those invisible once the box is closed.

    Both decorative and functional, this box can hold jewelry, small objects, precious papers, or simply be displayed as an ancient, refined, and timeless Japanese art object.
