Description
This small round Japanese lacquer box is a beautiful example of the refined craftsmanship of the Shōwa era, a period during which traditional urushi lacquer techniques continued to be passed down while adapting to everyday objects, simple and elegant.
The surface is entirely decorated with nashiji (梨地), a technique consisting of sprinkling fine gold particles into the still-wet lacquer, creating a subtle and deep shimmer. The warm and delicate reddish-brown hue gently catches the light and highlights the perfect roundness of its form.
Inside the lid is a golden inscription mentioning 竹園山 徳應閣 (Chikuen-zan – Tokuō-kaku), literally "Bamboo Garden Mountain – Pavilion of Virtuous Response." This type of inscription is generally associated with a Buddhist temple or an affiliated pavilion, suggesting its use or distribution in a religious or commemorative context. Originally, this box was most likely intended to hold incense, in the form of a kōgō.
Today, it is perfectly suited for contemporary use: a jewelry box, a case for small precious objects, or a simple decorative item.
🦝 We love:
We love the history of this box connected to the world of Japanese temples, which makes us imagine a Buddhist monk handling it in his temple!
