From the Wajima region of the Noto Peninsula, this black urushi lacquer box is an iconic example of traditional Japanese craftsmanship . Produced by Kozaki Shikki-ten (子崎漆器店) , a specialist workshop in Wajima, it illustrates the delicacy of Wajima-nuri art, renowned for its strength and deep luster.

Its decoration represents a pair of birds nesting on branches of Japanese maples ( momiji ), a classic motif of Japanese seasonal symbolism. This design is made in maki-e (蒔絵).

The box is made from solid wood (mentioned 本堅地 on the certificate), and its surface is coated with successive layers of urushi lacquer, then polished by hand. It retains its original wrapping paper , bearing a stamped seal with the address of the Kozaki workshop, its period telephone number (669!), and the words輪島塗正産 – Wajima-nuri genuine product .
