Description
This superb chawan Hagi-yaki 萩焼 is a work by Kaneko Shōen 金子松延, the name used by the ceramist before he adopted that of Kaneko Sōfū 金子宗楓.
The bowl features a beautiful glaze in shades of rosy beige and sand, with magnificent bluish-grey nuances. These darker areas appear freely on the surface and give the bowl a very strong character, with different variations on each side.
The glaze also shows fine crazing, mineral traces related to the local clay, and traces of turning, characteristic of Hagi-yaki. With use, this type of ceramic gradually evolves in contact with tea, a phenomenon known as Hagi no nanabake 萩の七化, the "seven transformations of Hagi".
The wan-nari 椀形 shape is round and balanced, with a rounded belly and a rather high kōdai 高台 foot, which gives the bowl a lot of style. The potter's seal is visible on the base.
🏺 Kaneko Shōen / Kaneko Sōfū
Kaneko Shōen 金子松延, who later adopted the name Kaneko Sōfū 金子宗楓, was a Hagi ceramist based in Sakaigawa, Nagato, Yamaguchi Prefecture.
He trained for over ten years with Sakakura Shinbei 坂倉新兵衛, a leading figure in Fukagawa-Hagi and a holder of an intangible cultural heritage designation from Yamaguchi Prefecture.
He founded the Kyokuunzan Shōen-gama 旭雲山 松延窯, under the name Shōen. He then took the name Sōfū 宗楓, under which he seems to have gained wider recognition. He exhibited regularly in the 90s, including an exhibition at Kintetsu in 2000. Catalogues and publications were dedicated to him in the 90s-2000s.
He died in the early 2000s. His work remains associated with a personal interpretation of Hagi, between chanoyu tradition and contemporary sensibility.
📦 Tomobako and shiori
The chawan comes with its tomobako 共箱 made of paulownia, calligraphed with the name Kyokuunzan and Kaneko Shōen, as well as the cloth accompanying the bowl and the original shiori from the workshop.
🦝 Our opinion
A real KOGEDO favorite, we are fans of Hagi-yaki chawan!
The bluish-grey nuances are particularly beautiful and give a lot of depth to the glaze. Its shape is very classy and it truly exudes the aura of a high-quality Hagi bowl.
A superb authentic Hagi-yaki chawan, interesting both for matcha practice and for a collection of Japanese ceramics.
