    Description

This Japanese black raku chawan 黒楽 is a work by Watanabe Kōraku 渡辺光楽, a ceramist born in 1951 and based in Yamashina district, Kyoto. His work is mainly dedicated to utensils for chanoyu 茶の湯, the Japanese tea ceremony.

The deep and brilliant black glaze reveals subtle reddish-brown reflections depending on the light. Its slightly grainy surface, punctuated by variations and irregularities, retains all the tactile presence characteristic of raku-yaki 楽焼. Inside, fine light speckles enliven the dark enamel and enhance the visual depth of the bowl.

The han-tsutsu-gata 半筒形, semi-cylindrical shape, offers a stable and generous silhouette. The thick walls, the irregular rim, and the simply crafted ring foot express a profoundly wabi-sabi aesthetic, based on sobriety, asymmetry, and the beauty of the material.

Under the base appears the seal 光楽, Watanabe Kōraku's mark, placed in a small circular reserve left visible under the glaze.

    📦 Tomobako and Zen inscription

The traditional paulownia wooden box bears several inscriptions:

    • 黒楽茶盌 — black raku chawan
    • 光楽作 — made by Kōraku
    • 銘 寿山 — named Juzan, "Longevity Mountain"
    • 前大徳 朴堂 — Satō Bokudō, with his title of Zen master of Daitoku-ji Zen Daitoku 前大徳

Satō Bokudō 佐藤朴堂, former superior of Fukuju-in 福聚院, affiliated with the Daitoku ji temple in Kyoto, calligraphed the box and gave the bowl its poetic name 寿山 Juzan. This inscription is an important element of provenance and enhances the piece's interest for lovers of Japanese ceramics, chanoyu, and Zen calligraphy.

    🦝 Our opinion

A superb kuro-raku chawan 黒楽茶碗, sober, dense, and particularly harmonious.

The quality of the glaze, the irregular and perfectly mastered semi-cylindrical shape, as well as the tomobako inscribed by Satō Bokudō give this piece character and true cultural depth. Everything we love at KOGEDO!
