Description
This chawan Beni Shino 紅志野茶碗 is a beautiful Japanese matcha bowl made by the 桂山窯 Keizan-gama kiln, accompanied by a tomobako box and its shiori.
Beni Shino 紅志野 is a variation of Shino-yaki where a ferruginous slip is applied under a thick white feldspathic glaze, resulting in red, pink, and rust-brown hues during firing.
The hantsutsu-gata 半筒型, semi-cylindrical shape, typical of Shino-yaki, gives the bowl a stable, understated, and generous presence. It is very well suited for preparing matcha.
The surface features a beautiful clear, almost milky glaze, punctuated by small ferruginous spots and large areas especially visible near the foot. There is also a subtle yuzuhada 柚子肌 effect, this slightly pitted and granular texture, compared to yuzu skin, which brings a lot of life to the Shino glaze.
The subtly irregular rim maintains a pleasant softness in hand. The well-turned ring foot kōdai 高台 ensures the bowl's stability.
📦 Tomobako and shiori
The wooden tomobako 共箱 bears the inscription 茶盌 / 茶碗, the signature 桂山 and the workshop's red seal. It accompanies the bowl with its traditional cord and protective cloth.
The shiori しおり (document accompanying the bowl) highlights the historical importance of ancient Mino ceramics: since the Tenpyō and Momoyama periods, this tradition has developed a brilliant style. Great lords, starting with Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi, particularly appreciated Shino, Oribe, and Tenmoku glazes, admired for their mystical depth, their yūgen 幽玄.
🦝 Our opinion
A superb chawan Beni Shino that exudes true power and is quite substantial! We love its thick white glaze punctuated with rust-brown spots and its more burnt areas near the foot! An ideal piece for matcha enthusiasts, Japanese ceramic collectors, or lovers of wabi-sabi.
