Description
This Iwakuni-yaki chawan, a rare piece signed by Yamada Shōtō (山田象陶), exemplifies the Iwakuni style, which is characterized by deep glazes, distinctive textures, and a deliberate emphasis on raw material.
The bowl's silhouette is freely flared, not conforming to a codified shape: balanced proportions, unglazed foot, and finger marks that highlight its wabi-sabi character. The speckled and slightly irregular glaze enhances the Iwakuni clay.
About the artisan
Yamada Shōtō is the potter who revitalized the Iwakuni-yaki tradition, originally founded in 1700 by an artisan from Kyōto. He relaunched it in 1973 with the opening of the Kikkō-gama kiln. He is a recognized artist who has won several awards and is the author of several works found in Iwakuni buildings. His son has now taken over the kiln, and Yamada Shōtō now runs an Udon noodle restaurant!
