    Description

    This black raku (黒楽) chawan is the work of Sasaki Shōraku (佐々木松楽), a Kyoto potter, born in 1944, belonging to an artisan lineage active since the 20th century. The Shōraku workshop is known for producing chawan intended for actual tea practice, respecting the traditional methods of raku-yaki: hand-modeling, low-temperature firing, and incandescent removal from the kiln.

    The deep black glaze features reddish "火色 hi-iro" reflections, a result of firing in strong reduction. The interior shows fine ferruginous speckles, characteristic of black raku, which highlight the depth of the material.

    The shape is a relatively tall 半筒型 (han-tsutsu-gata), a semi-cylindrical silhouette favored for winter chawan: stable, dense, and retaining the heat of the matcha well. The slightly granular exterior texture, as well as the simply hand-shaped foot, fully express the wabi-sabi aesthetic of raku.
    The potter's seal is clearly affixed under the base, typical of Shōraku's works.
