    Description

    This Kyō-yaki 京焼茶碗 chawan is a Japanese matcha bowl made by Shōzaemon 庄左衛門 at the 押小路窯 Oshikōji-gama kiln, accompanied by its inscribed tomobako.

    Its decor features the senmen-nagashi 扇面流し theme, "fans floating on the water," associated with Nonomura Ninsei's repertoire. Open fans seem to drift among blue currents, in a composition that enlivens both the exterior and interior of the bowl.

    The komogai-nari 熊川形 shape, deep and rounded, narrows towards a ring foot. Its balanced profile offers a comfortable grip and a suitable volume for matcha preparation.

    The surface displays a rich iro-e 色絵 decoration, emblematic of Kyō-yaki, painted in blue, turquoise, green, red, purple, brown, and white. The motifs show peonies, plum blossoms, kikyō bellflowers, irises, bamboo, and maple leaves, gathered like a garden of Japanese seasons.

    The ensemble is enhanced by a kinrande 金襴手 decoration: gold highlights the contours, structures the fans, and covers deliberately mottled backgrounds. These luminous effects, combined with the fine crazing of the ivory glaze, create a depth reminiscent of brocades.

    📦 Tomobako and inscriptions

    The wooden tomobako 共箱 bears the inscription 仁清扇面流し茶碗, indicating a "Ninsei style chawan with floating fan decoration," along with the name of the Oshikōji kiln and Shōzaemon's signature with his seal.

    The old Oshikōji-yaki dates back to the beginnings of Kyō-yaki in the Edo period. Its tradition is linked to the Sanmonjiya brothers, Shōzaemon and Sukezaemon, who trained with Ninsei. Nonomura Ninsei 野々村仁清 is one of the great masters of 17th-century Kyō-yaki, famous for his refined iro-e decorations and sumptuous gold accents. Restored in modern times, the kiln perpetuates this refined aesthetic in chanoyu utensils with polychrome and gilded decorations.
