    Description

    This Oribe-yaki chawan (織部焼) is a piece signed by Kosaburō (五代 小三郎), a fifth-generation potter from the Kikyōya-gama (桔梗屋窯) workshop, an old Mino kiln. For over 120 years, the workshop has continued a family tradition dedicated to Mino ceramics, one of the great historical centers of Japanese pottery.

    Oribe-yaki is one of the iconic ceramics of the Azuchi-Momoyama period, alongside Shino-yaki. Developed under the influence of tea master Furuta Oribe, it is distinguished by the use of a copper-green glaze, free forms, and bold designs, often asymmetrical or graphic.

    The surface of this bowl features a beautiful contrast between a luminous, slightly crazed cream enamel and a deep green rim where the Oribe glaze forms lovely drips. There is also a yuzu-hada (柚子肌) texture, also known as "yuzu skin," similar to an orange peel effect, typical of certain Japanese Mino ceramics.

    The spontaneously drawn brown decoration brings a very lively movement to the whole. These abstract lines interact with the roundness of the bowl and reinforce its wabi-sabi (侘寂) spirit, where irregularities, textures, and firing nuances become an integral part of the object's beauty.

    Its low and generous shape offers an excellent grip for preparing tea. The simple and light interior will particularly highlight the green of the tea. The discreetly turned foot ensures good stability and reveals the light clay of the piece.

    The Kikyōya-gama workshop has been distinguished several times at exhibitions of new Mino-yaki creations, notably by the Governor of Gifu Prefecture Award. This piece thus demonstrates recognized family expertise, passed down through several generations.
