Description
This magnificent Shigaraki-yaki 信楽焼 chawan is a work signed by Naohiko Koyama 神山直彦, a Shigaraki ceramicist recognized for his work with firing effects and ash glazes.
The bowl offers a remarkable landscape of fire, shifting from hi-iro brownish-red to nearly black areas, then to a heavily speckled gray surface. These variations follow the flow of flame and ash, giving each side a very distinct character.
The Shigaraki clay remains clearly visible, rich in mineral inclusions and feldspar grains. Some surface or burst, creating effects similar to ishihaze 石はぜ. The rim concentrates more ash and features fine natural vitrification in some places.
The wan-nari 碗形 shape is balanced and rounded with a slightly irregular lip and a small low kōdai 高台. Koyama's tōin 陶印 and signature are present under the base.
The Artist: Naohiko Koyama 神山直彦
Born in 1953 in Shiga Prefecture, Naohiko Koyama is a renowned Japanese ceramicist specializing in the Shigaraki tradition.
He graduated in 1971 from the ceramics department of Shigaraki High School, then completed training at the Shiga Prefectural Ceramic Testing Institute in 1973. He later studied under ceramicist Mashimizu Zōroku 眞清水藏六.
In 1976, he built his own anagama kiln. In 1989, he became a full member of the Japan Kōgei Association, a status he still holds today.
His work particularly explores yōhen 窯変 and kaiyū 灰釉, or ash glaze. His works are regularly selected for Japan Kōgei Association exhibitions.
📦 Tomobako
The chawan comes with its paulownia tomobako 共箱. The lid bears the inscription 信楽 茶盌, "Shigaraki chawan," as well as 直彦造, "made by Naohiko," along with the artist's red seal.
🦝 Our Opinion
A magnificent chawan for lovers of artisanal Shigaraki and raw tea bowls, but with a great deal of skill behind it!
We love the changes on its different sides, between the hi-iro brownish-red, the dark zones, and the areas covered in ash! The highly mineral texture, the small kōdai, and the irregular wan-nari shape give it a refined style. This bowl fully reveals Naohiko Koyama's mastery of fire.
A beautiful, authentic, signed Shigaraki chawan, perfect for both the practice of matcha and for a collection of contemporary Japanese ceramics.
