    Description

    Elegant Japanese lidded porcelain bowl from Arita, produced in the former province of Hizen, one of the great historical centers of Japanese ceramics.

    This piece belongs to the Arita-yaki (有田焼) tradition of the Meiji period, during which workshops perfected polychrome decorations inherited from the Imari aesthetic.

    The decoration combines large stylized botan (牡丹) peonies, a classic symbol of prosperity and elegance, with several butterflies delicately arranged on the surface. In Japanese painting, this type of composition belongs to the kachō (花蝶) genre – literally "flowers and butterflies."

    The motifs are painted in underglaze cobalt blue (before firing) sometsuke (染付), enhanced with red and gilding in a kinrande style, a decorative technique much appreciated in refined tableware of the late 19th century.

    The details are very finely executed.

    Manufacturer's Seal: Hizen (肥前)

    On the top of the lid (futa 蓋) appears a square red seal bearing the stylized inscription Hizen.

    This mark refers to the ancient historical province of Hizen-koku (肥前国), a territory to which Arita, one of Japan's largest porcelain production centers, belonged.

    About this type of mark:

    Mainly used between the end of the Edo period and the Meiji era,
    Indicates production from the Arita region, famous for its porcelains exported worldwide,
    Frequently found on refined tableware pieces intended for both the Japanese and international markets.

    A very beautiful Arita porcelain with lid, typical of the refined production of the late 19th century.
    We particularly love the gilded peonies and blue butterflies that seem to almost fly around the bowl!
