Description
This Kutani chawan is a work signed Seishō (星昭), an artisan associated with the decorative tradition of Kutani, renowned for its luminous enamels and remarkably delicate floral compositions. The artist here depicts two emblematic flowers from the Japanese calendar enhanced with gold accents (金彩 kinsai):
- the chrysanthemum (菊 kiku), a symbol of autumn,
- the camellia (椿 tsubaki), a discreet and noble flower associated with winter and tea gatherings.
This seasonal floral combination — autumn & winter — makes it a bowl perfectly suited for late-year tea services, where the succession of seasons is celebrated in the aesthetics of chanoyu.
The shape is a slightly flared wan-nari (碗形), comfortable to hold and pleasant for regular matcha practice. The foot (高台 koudai), carefully turned and left unglazed, expresses the traditional sobriety of Kutani workshops, while the red seal 星昭 is affixed to the base.
Tomobako (original box)
The wooden box bears:
- the inscription 九谷茶盌 (Kutani Chawan)
- the artist's name 星昭
- the signature of the kiln/workshop
It guarantees the origin of the piece and its transmission according to the rules of art.
