    Description

    This Bizen-yaki (備前焼) chawan is a work signed by Mori Tōzan (森陶山), a ceramist born in 1938 and active since the late 1950s, renowned for his work faithful to the traditions of Bizen pottery, one of Japan's six great ancient kilns. His kiln is still active in the Bizen region!

    Bizen-yaki is distinguished by the complete absence of glaze (無釉 muyu) and a long firing in an anagama kiln, revealing the natural beauty of the clay. This technique, called yakishime (焼締), relies on a direct interaction between clay, fire, and ashes, producing unique effects called yōhen (窯変).

    The surface displays subtle variations in shades, ranging from sandy tones to warm brown nuances, with areas naturally vitrified by the flame. The interior, sober and mineral, highlights the raw material and the depth of the bowl, ideal for matcha preparation.

    The free, slightly flared, discreetly irregular shape, in the Bizen style, offers an excellent grip and fits into a wabi-sabi (侘寂) aesthetic, where simplicity, irregularity, and authenticity are sought after. The foot (高台 kōdai), subtly shaped, gives good stability to the bowl. The typical signature of Mori Tōzan (森陶山) is found under the bowl.

    In the artist's words, Bizen is an "art of fire and earth", where man collaborates with nature. Each piece is the result of this relationship, giving birth to an object that is both functional and deeply expressive.
