    Description

    This handmade Japanese chawan, discovered in Yamaguchi Prefecture, is distinguished by a finely crackled clear glaze (kan-nyū) and a pronounced presence of the clay body, visible at the foot and in areas where the glaze has receded.

    The overall shape, balanced and stable, features a high and well-turned foot, slightly flared, which gives the bowl a solid base and a good grip. The silhouette does not strictly conform to a codified form (ido-gata or tenmoku) but reflects a free and functional approach to the chawan.

    The clay body, slightly grogged and high-fired, reveals a natural and warm texture. The firing variations — bluish-grey nuances, denser areas, and reduction marks — reinforce the wabi-sabi aesthetic, where imperfection becomes intention.

    Beneath the foot, a circular seal bearing the kanji 陽 (yō) is visible. To date, no specific kiln or artisan has been formally identified.

    Regarding attribution

    Although some elements — clear crackled glaze, Yamaguchi origin, high foot — may evoke regional traditions such as Hagi-yaki, no definitive attribution can be made at this stage.

    This handmade chawan captivated us above all by its assertive wabi-sabi character.
    Its assumed irregularity, its pronounced red clay body, and its high foot give it a true personality, both stable and expressive.

    Its crackled glaze and beautiful blue and grey nuances are very elegant. An antique handmade chawan at a very reasonable price!
