✨ Description
This Japanese chawan is a stoneware piece with ash glaze (灰釉 / haïyu), created by Taniguchi Akikazu (谷口明一) in the Nichigetsu-gama (日月窯) kiln, linked to the Seto-yaki tradition. It is a delicate work with a dark, black surface with metallic reflections, punctuated by grayish micro-specks. Light glides over the surface, revealing subtle nuances of ink and molten ash.
The bowl is close to the form known as Komogai-nari (籠貝形), literally "basket shell shape": a supple silhouette, slightly flared upwards, with a subtly undulating rim reminiscent of the natural curves of a seashell.
The foot (kōdai), in raw light stoneware, features a deep spiral pattern (渦巻き / uzumaki), a visible trace of hand-throwing, which highlights the artisan's gesture and the piece's anchoring in Japanese ceramic tradition. It bears a hand-incised signature: 明一 (Akikazu), the artisan's given name.
The whole offers a balanced tension between the raw material of the light stoneware and the deep black of the ash glaze. A bowl that is both sober and powerful, typical of Japanese tea aesthetics.
📦 Tomobako (calligraphed original box)
The wooden box (共箱 / tomobako) is entirely original with its protective cloth.
It includes:
- A black ink inscription: 灰釉 茶碗 (ash-glazed chawan)
- The artisan's mention: 明一 作
- Two red seals: one from the kiln, one personal to the artist
It guarantees the authenticity of the piece and its direct provenance from a recognized workshop in the Japanese tea world.
🦝 Our opinion
A chawan of great quality, where one can feel the care of the gesture in the Komagai-nari inspired shape and the black glaze with mirroring metallic reflections. The whole is impressive with care given even to the foot with this swirling uzumaki pattern! A real favorite for the KOGEDO team!
