This chawan (tea bowl for the tea ceremony) is a handcrafted piece made in the tradition of 志野焼 (Shino-yaki), a pottery style that emerged in the late 16th century in the Mino region (Gifu Prefecture, Japan).
It is distinguished by a thick, white, and lustrous glaze, traversed by ferrous mottling and firing zones revealing blue-grey hues depending on the light.
✨ Aesthetic Features
- Irregular shape: subtly asymmetrical, it evokes the spirit of wabi-sabi, valuing natural imperfection and the potter's touch.
- White Shino glaze: dense, luminous, with iron inclusions forming organic veins characteristic of the Shino style.
- Plainly glazed interior: pale grey hue with firing marks.
- Hand-turned foot, unglazed, revealing an ochre clay characteristic of Mino kilns.
- Artisan's mark pressed into the clay on the exterior base of the bowl.
📦 Tomobako (Signed Original Box)
The bowl comes in its tomobako 共箱, a custom-made wooden box for the object. The lid is calligraphed
- Inscription: 志野茶盌 (Shino Chawan) – “Shino tea bowl”
- Signature: Hand-written Kanji + red seal (hanko) of the artisan. Not clearly legible, as a precaution, the name is not affirmed.
🦝 Our opinion: a magnificent Chawan in the pure Shino-yaki tradition! ✨ With calligraphed wooden box
