    Description

    Pair of Japanese Kokeshi Shingata wooden dolls, Oyako (mother–child) theme, signed by Hamatsu Chiyoko (Nidaime Tetsuen).

    These rare kokeshi feature round heads, characteristic of Nidaime Tetsuen's Shingata style. The proportions are simple and balanced, giving the whole a very beautiful style.

    The wood shows a dark and uniform patina, a result of time and careful workmanship. The floral decoration, hand-painted, is precise and well executed: clear red patterns, structured dark foliage, regular application without overload.

    About the artisan — Hamatsu Chiyoko (1932–2007)

    Born on October 17, 1932, in Tochigi Prefecture, Hamatsu Chiyoko was the sister-in-law of artisan Yashiro Tetsuen. In 1956, she married Hamatsu Heizaburo and began painting kokeshi turned by her husband, who was trained by Niyama Sanai.

    In 1970, wishing to perpetuate the style of Yashiro Tetsuen, she produced kokeshi painted in this spirit and adopted the name Nidaime Tetsuen 二代目 哲園. Her work is now appreciated for its elegance, expressive softness, and its importance in the history of Shingata kokeshi. She passed away in 2007 at the age of 76.

    She is now very renowned for her Shingata kokeshi and successor to the famous Yashiro Tetsuen.
