This vintage Japanese ceramic daruma is an emblematic piece of popular art from the Shōwa era. Recognizable by its rounded shape and its intentionally intense expression, it embodies perseverance, determination, and inner strength.

Originally, the daruma is inspired by Bodhidharma (Daruma in Japanese), an Indian Buddhist monk considered the founder of Zen. According to legend, he meditated facing a wall for nine years without interruption, to the point of losing the use of his arms and legs. From this story comes the characteristic shape of the daruma, intentionally rounded and limbless, a symbol of absolute perseverance, discipline, and resilience.

At the back, a slot allows it to be used as a piggy bank, highlighting its dual role: a ritual object and an everyday companion, charged with looking after projects... and savings.

    🦝 Our opinion

A daruma just the way we like them at KOGEDO: simple, expressive, and full of meaning. Its patina tells a true story, and its small discreet crack gives it even more character. A beautiful piece for those who move forward with conviction... and a little luck in their pocket.
