Splendid antique set from the Edo period, probably 19th century. It consists of a Japanese Kushi comb and its matching Kogai hairpin. Made of black lacquered wood (urushi-nuri 漆塗り) and decorated with gold motifs (maki-e 蒔絵) and mother-of-pearl inlays (螺鈿 raden), this set embodies the ultimate refinement of traditional Japanese craftsmanship.

The richness of the ornamentation reveals chrysanthemum flowers (菊, kiku), emblems of longevity, accompanied by golden foliage, phoenix feathers, and stylized pine cones (in relief), evoking nature and constancy. The whole is enhanced by subtle iridescent mother-of-pearl highlights with green, blue, ivory, and pink hues, creating a delicate contrast with the deep black background of the lacquer.

Each piece is finely decorated on both sides, demonstrating the meticulous craftsmanship and exceptional care given to this object intended for women of high society.

💡 Sold in its red silk-lined case, enhancing its prestige.

📸 Condition: Antique, excellent state of preservation. No major gaps or structural defects. The inlays are almost intact, which is rare for a piece of this period.

    🦝 Our opinion:

This rare and precious set is a true time capsule. Through its refined execution and symbolic richness, it evokes the feminine grace of ancient Japan. At KOGEDO, we are touched by the quiet strength emanating from these objects: between discreet luxury and living memory. To collect, display, or pair with a contemporary silhouette for a decidedly poetic look. Wear it with class on a vintage kimono or for a refined contrast, with a contemporary creation by Kogedo l'Atelier.
