Subject :
This elegant print by Kikugawa Eizan depicts two bijin美人 (beautiful women) in a refined interior, typical of scenes from Edo city life.
The two courtesans are dressed in sumptuous kimonos with delicate floral patterns and wear traditional kanzashi hair . One of them holds a makimono (scroll), likely a letter or poem, while the other watches her intently.
The scene, intimate and graceful, perfectly captures the aesthetic of bijin-ga , where feminine elegance and refinement of detail are at the heart of the composition.
The background suggests a traditional interior setting with a shoji (sliding paper door).
Condition: Print in degraded condition, but with a certain charm for lovers of authenticity (see photos):
- Tears visible at the bottom, top and sides
- Wear marks and some small stains on the washi paper
- Colors slightly faded, but still present
This piece remains a beautiful testimony to Eizan 's art, despite its fragile condition.
🦝 Our opinion :
A print full of softness and refinement, typical of the delicate style of Kikugawa Eizan , spiritual heir of Utamaro .
Despite its age-related imperfections, this work retains all the grace of Edo-period bijin-ga : elegant gestures, finely drawn kimonos, and the hushed atmosphere typical of scenes of feminine intimacy.
🎴 Rare piece : Kikugawa Eizan 's works are rarely found on the Japanese print market. This original print represents a great opportunity to acquire an authentic bijin-ga by a refined and discreet master of the Edo period at an affordable price.
