Title: 富嶽三十六景 Fugaku Sanjūrokkei Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji
常州牛堀 Jōshū UshiboriUshibori in Hitachi Province

Origin: Japan, found in Kyōto Prefecture.

    Subject:

Located in Ushibori, a former port in Hitachi Province (present-day Ibaraki Prefecture), this print is the most eastern and isolated of the entire Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji series. It depicts a tranquil scene on the banks of Lake Kasumigaura, which has a narrow access to the sea.

In the foreground, a large transport boat is at rest, with its mast lowered, partially loaded with stones covered with mats and bundles of reeds. Crew members are busy in their simple living space: one pours rice rinsing water into the lake, causing two egrets to fly away — the only elements of commotion in an otherwise calm and silent scene.

Mount Fuji, majestic but distant, stands in the background. Hokusai here plays on the graphic contrast between the bow of the boat, which emerges diagonally, and the soft lines of the volcano, in a composition of great plastic force. The rocky relief in the foreground could be an evocation of Gongenyama, a hill overlooking Ushibori.

Condition: Print in very good condition, presented with passepartout. Intense deep blue color.

    🦝 Our opinion:

A very beautiful Shōwa reproduction, which highlights Hokusai's elegant graphics and mastery of composition. The intense blue that fills the entire scene creates a calm and stylized, almost suspended atmosphere. The opposition between the modest human presence and the stillness of Mount Fuji gives this print a striking atmosphere. A perfect example of ukiyo-e: "pictures of a fleeting and floating world."

A magnificent landscape print by the great undisputed master Katsuhika Hokusai, and it's clear why!
