    This print is one of the most charming images in the series, as it combines landscape, travel scene and Japanese craftsmanship. Hiroshige shows Narumi-juku, a famous stop on the Tōkaidō road, known for its Arimatsu shibori dyed fabrics.

    In the foreground, we see female travelers walking, a kago 駕籠 palanquin carried by two men, then further on a horseman accompanied by a walker. The whole scene is full of movement, but without agitation. One really feels the peaceful atmosphere of a relay on the road, with its passers-by, travelers and daily life.

    The composition is very beautiful, with the large roofs, the perspective of the path and the different figures that naturally guide the eye. But what we particularly like here, of course, are the hanging fabrics in the shop. Their deep blues, their repetitive patterns and their very visible presence in the image pay homage to the art of shibori, which we at KOGEDO love so much.

    Through this simple and lively scene, Hiroshige does not only represent a station on the Tōkaidō. He also shows a place of passage, commerce and textile know-how. It is this mixture of travel, scenery and craftsmanship that gives this work all its charm.

    Print in very good condition, with margins. Vivid colors, quality washi paper, thin for a re-issue, very good print quality typical of a careful Shōwa re-issue. Publisher's seal Iwanami Shōten visible at the bottom right.

    This print by Hiroshige is truly superb! It has everything we love about the great views of the Tōkaidō: travel, the life of the Edo period, the gentleness of the landscape and especially here the magnificent presence of shibori fabrics!

    A very beautiful Shōwa re-issue by Iwanami Shōten, authentic and full of poetry, for ukiyo-e enthusiasts as well as lovers of Japan or Hiroshige.
