    Title: 相州箱根湖水 (Sōshū Hakone kosui)
    Lake Hakone in Sagami Province

    Subject:

This print offers one of the most peaceful visions of the series. Hokusai depicts Lake Hakone, in the heart of the former province of Sagami, while Mount Fuji appears in the distance, white, behind the wooded hills.

The composition is built in successive planes: the blue water of the lake, the banks covered with conifers, and then long strips of pink mist winding between the hills. These suyari gasumi forms, typical of Japanese imagery, naturally guide the eye towards Fuji.

A few buildings appear discreetly on the shore, almost absorbed by the vegetation. Here, Hokusai reduces human presence to a minimum and leaves all the space to the landscape. The deep greens, soft yellows, and blues create a calm and luminous atmosphere.

Fuji, slightly off-center, echoes the powerful curves of the Hakone mountains. The bokashi gradients of the sky and lake bring depth and softness, while the precise contours of the trees add rhythm to this silent scene.

This genuine Japanese print, an authentic Shōwa reissue published by Yūyūdō, is of very fine quality, produced by specialized artisans: Itō Susumu for the engraving and Itō Tarō for the printing.

Condition: Very beautiful general condition, presented with a mat. Fresh colors. Very light micro-traces of foxing in the margin near the signature and at the bottom right, very barely visible.

    🦝 Our opinion:

This genuine print by master Hokusai transports us immediately to Hakone! The lake, the wooded mountains, and Fuji in the distance inevitably recall this iconic stop on a trip to Japan, with its calm atmosphere and grand landscapes! We especially love the soft colors and the clouds of mist!

A superb Yūyūdō reissue, perfect for those who love Hokusai, Fuji, Hakone, or want to bring home a very Japanese souvenir of this region.
