Title: 富嶽三十六景 信州諏訪湖 (Fugaku Sanjūrokkei – Shinshū Suwa-ko) – Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji: Lake Suwa in Shinano Province

    Subject:

In this view of Lake Suwa (Nagano Prefecture), Hokusai plays with forms to create a subtle analogy: the thatched roof of the shrine echoes the silhouette of Mount Fuji. This visual correspondence, frequent in his work, establishes a graphic and symbolic dialogue between the sacred mountain and the place of worship.

The composition contrasts the peaceful solidity of the shrine and the two pines in the foreground with the soft, distant lines of Mount Fuji dominating the horizon. Between them, the calm and luminous lake hosts a small boat gently gliding on the water. On the opposite bank, a Japanese castle and a few buildings can be glimpsed in a blue and green landscape, typical of Hokusai's palette.

The scene is a perfect balance between nature, architecture, and spirituality, in an atmosphere of serenity.

Marks: Red Eijudō seal (original publisher) and Kiwame censorship seal

Condition: Print in perfect condition, presented with mat board (marie-louise). Glued to the mat board with 2 glue points in the margin. Vivid and contrasting colors, intense deep Prussian blue characteristic of Shōwa era prints.

    🦝 Our opinion:

A high-quality Shōwa reproduction that faithfully renders the fineness of the line and the elegance of Hokusai's composition. The colors are powerful!

An image of a suspended world, where the calm of the lake responds to the majesty of Fuji. A perfect example of ukiyo-e"pictures of a floating world".

And what's more, Lake Suwa is the lake where the meteorite falls in the magnificent animated film Kimi no na wa (Your Name), one of our favorite films!
