    About the artist:

Toyohara Kunichika (1835–1900) is one of the great ukiyo-e masters of the second half of the 19th century. A student of Kunisada, he particularly excelled in yakusha-e, the portrait of Kabuki actors, a field in which he developed an immediately recognizable style: powerful faces, tight framing, bold colors, and particular attention to costumes. Active at the turn of the late Edo and early Meiji eras, he is often considered one of the last great representatives of traditional ukiyo-e.

    Subject:

This print depicts Ōtani Tomoemon V, an important actor of the late Edo period, in the role of Asahina Tōbei. A member of the theatrical house Akashiya, Tomoemon V interpreted this character several times in the 1860s: Kunichika had already depicted him in the same role in 1866.

Asahina Tōbei is a legendary figure from the world of kyōkaku, the strong and protective men popularized by Edo theater and literature. The character is notably associated with the play Gokusaishiki Musume Ōgi.

The print belongs to the series Ryūkō moyō iro no harusame, dedicated to actors highlighted by particularly spectacular costumes. Here, Kunichika pushes the motif very far: the garment is adorned with Enma 閻魔, King of Hell, surrounded by several oni 鬼 who appear in reserve on the blue fabric.

The background is drawn with rain lines, which reinforce the dramatic atmosphere of the scene and recall the title of the series and the spring rain.

    Condition:

Exceptional condition, perfectly preserved colors, margins in perfect condition, no missing parts, tears, wormholes or other defects. Rare for a piece nearly 160 years old!

    🦝 Our opinion:

We love this print by the great master Kunichika for its completely insane costume, which is clearly the heart of the work: Enma surrounded by oni, spectacular!

It is also in a rare state of preservation and was published in the last year of the Edo era in 1867! A very beautiful piece for lovers of ukiyo-e, the great master Kunichika, kabuki, or ancient Japanese art.
