    About the artist:

    Utagawa Kunisada (1786–1865), also known as Toyokuni III, was one of the essential figures and a grand master of the Utagawa school during the Edo period. Highly appreciated during his lifetime, he excelled in portraits of actors, female beauties, and genre scenes. His style is recognized by the elegance of the silhouettes, delicate faces, refined hairstyles, and the decorative richness of the kimonos.

    This authentic old Japanese print depicts two women dressed in beautiful kimonos, accompanied by a child held in the center of the scene. The subject falls under both bijin-ga, due to the presence of elegant female beauties, and fūzoku-ga, a scene of daily life showing the customs and appearances of the Edo period.

    The composition highlights the refinement of the floating world: elaborate kimonos, blue floral patterns, deep purple, red borders, intricate hairstyles, golden kanzashi, and the characters' attitudes. In the background, a garden landscape with pines, vegetation, and blossoms evokes a spring stroll.

    Condition:

    A beautiful example in very good overall condition, old with still vibrant colors. Period paper with few smudges despite the very light background. Tiny snag on the lower margin. The verso shows printing marks and some old annotations, obviously invisible on the recto.

    An authentic Edo print nearly 200 years old, full of charm, very representative of Kunisada Toyokuni III's talent for female figures and sumptuous fabrics. We love the contrast between the soft, light background of this family scene, the delicacy of the faces, and the exuberance of the kimonos. A superb piece in a sought-after Bijin-ga style, ideal for ukiyo-e, bijin-ga, antique Japanese fashion, and authentic Japanese art enthusiasts, to frame, collect, and pass down for generations.
