"Actor Kawarazaki Gonjūrō I in the role of the samurai Nagoya Sanza"
About Utagawa Kunisada, Toyokuni III:
A major figure in ukiyo-e, Utagawa Kunisada, 1786–1865, dominated print production in Edo. Trained in Toyokuni I's workshop, he became one of the pillars of the Utagawa school before signing under the name Toyokuni III.
Kabuki theater was one of his favorite subjects. In his yakusha-e, Kunisada captured the personality of the stars through individualized faces, tension-filled gestures, brilliant fabrics, and very dynamic layouts. This abundant production accurately documented the actors, fashions, and popular imagination of Edo.
Play:
Chiyo no Haru Tosa-e no Saya-ate 鶴春土佐画鞘当, played at the Ichimura-za (市村座) theater in Edo, in the spring of 1861. This is a famous play featuring a dramatic confrontation between samurai in the Yoshiwara pleasure district.
Subject:
This print depicts Kawarazaki Gonjūrō I, future Ichikawa Danjūrō IX, in the role of Nagoya Sanza, a famous kabuki samurai. The character kneels, with an intense gaze, dressed in a remarkable blue kimono and wearing two swords at his belt.
The famous saya-ate 鞘当 "clash of scabbards" episode depicts the rivalry between Nagoya Sanza and Fuwa Banzaemon. Under the cherry blossoms, the two samurai provoke each other after their sword scabbards clash, in an emblematic kabuki scene.
Condition:
Very good overall condition for an original work from 1861. Naturally aged paper, visible signs of wear on the edges. Very beautiful and vibrant colors, especially blues, reds, and oranges. A light central crease and a small crease in the upper left corner.
🦝 Our opinion:
We really like this combo from Kunisada Toyokuni III: a charismatic Edo period actor, a samurai armed with two swords, kabuki, and sakura!
A very beautiful piece for an ukiyo-e or yakusha-e collector, a passionate fan of samurai, kabuki, and original Japanese prints, or simply authentic Japanese art from the Edo period.
