About the Artist:
Utagawa Kunisada (1786–1865), also known as Toyokuni III, is among the major artists of the Utagawa school during the Edo period. Immensely popular in his time, he is famous for his portraits of kabuki actors, his female beauties, and his very lively narrative compositions. His work is distinguished by the expressiveness of faces, the richness of costumes, and a remarkable taste for animated scenes from the floating world.
Subject:
This original print depicts the central sheet of the triptych Ôiri-maru, literally the “full house boat”. The term ôiri 大入 belongs to the theatrical vocabulary and evokes a great public success, a performance played to a full house. Associated with the suffix -maru, common in Japanese boat names, it becomes here the “ship of success.”
Kunisada brings together several famous kabuki actors on board a pleasure boat: Arashi Kichisaburô III, Bandô Shûka I, Hatagaya Shichiemon I, Matsumoto Kunigorô, Sawamura Chôjûrô V, Seki Sanjûrô III, Ichikawa Kuzô II, and Onoe Baikô IV. The composition is teeming with details: patterned kimonos, expressive faces, boat architecture, stylized blue waves, and a festive atmosphere typical of Edo entertainment.
Condition:
Beautiful colors preserved. Old paper with traces of time, small crease top right, light soiling and visible marks. Some small holes and surface wear with a small repair visible on the reverse side to hide a wormhole.
🦝 Our opinion:
A true Edo print as we love them at KOGEDO: lively, theatrical, full of characters and energy! We love the idea of the Ôiri-maru, this "boat of success" where kabuki stars seem to embark for a floating party. An authentic, very expressive piece, ideal for ukiyo-e, kabuki, Kunisada, and old Japanese art enthusiasts or for a collection of authentic Japanese prints.
