尾上梅寿一代噺
(Onoe Kikugorō Ichidai Banashi)
— Performance presented at the Ichimura-za (市村座) theater in Edo, in July 1847 (Kōka 4 era), 7th month.
An exceptional kabuki program tracing the career of actor Onoe Kikugorō III, conceived as a series of significant scenes blending drama, emotion, and spectacular effects.
Actor and character depicted
Actor: Fujikawa Kayû III (三代目 藤川花友)
Character: Kashiwagi (柏木)
Subject
This print depicts a night scene full of mystery and dramatic tension, typical of late Edo period kabuki theater.
The actor playing a woman (onnagata) is wrapped in a blanket, and his fear of the presence of a ghost (yōkai) in the room can be felt. The moon, the stylized decor, and the nocturnal atmosphere enhance the scene.
Kunisada emphasizes the theatrical atmosphere rather than a precise action, capturing the essence of a kabuki performance where fantasy (yōkai) and suggested emotion play a central role.
Condition
Original Edo period print, fair condition with several washi paper repairs.
➕ Legible impression with beautiful contrasts, clear seals and signatures
➕ Fine details visible in the lines and patterns
➕ Undoubled old Japanese washi paper
➖ Presence of several repairs with washi, paper thinned in places and wear on the edges
➖ Natural patina and oxidation of the paper
The verso shows the texture of the washi paper and traces of old use, attesting to the authenticity of the work.
🦝 Our opinion
A very nice print, full of history and depicting an Onnagata actor. Perfect for those who wish to acquire a true original Edo era Ukiyo-e by a great master at an attractive price, due to its repairs (almost invisible on the front!).
