Title: Hahakigi 帚木 (“The Broom Tree”) – plate no. 2
Series: Murasaki Shikibu Genji Karuta 紫式部源氏かるた
Subject
This print illustrates the Hahakigi chapter of the Genji Monogatari, a foundational novel of Japanese literature written by Murasaki Shikibu in the 11th century. In this second chapter, young Genji, at the age of 17, discusses his romantic experiences with his companions, and mentions a middle-class woman he has lost track of, as well as the child she was carrying.
Shortly after, during an unexpected stay in Kii province, Genji meets Utsusemi, the governor's stepmother. Seduced by her discretion and elegance, he manages to enter her room at night.
The print depicts this moment: Genji, slipping into the intimacy of an enclosed space, attempts to approach a married woman, who subsequently rejects him.
The title Hahakigi, literally "broom tree," is a metaphor for elusive love – light, carried away by the wind. It is a scene where desire, restraint, and solitude subtly intertwine.
✒️ Artistic details
The print is distinguished by a refined composition, where the shadows cast by the moonlight structure the space in a very modern way.
The diagonal shadows and openings to the landscape create an almost cinematic atmosphere.
The kimono patterns are carefully printed, and areas of karazuri (dry embossing) are visible on the garments, adding relief and texture.
📦 Condition
Original antique print, well preserved.
➕ Fresh colors, fine impression, flexible and embossed paper.
➖ Wear on the edges, some old wormholes in the upper and lower edges (not affecting the scene and decoration).
🦝 Our opinion
A rare and poetic plate, from a major narrative series.
We particularly appreciate the very modern and graphic moonlight and the Karazuri technique on the kimono.
