    About the artist:

    Utagawa Kuniteru II was an artist of the Utagawa school, active in the late Edo period. A pupil of Kunisada, he first worked under the name Kunitsuna II before adopting the name Kuniteru.

    His work is part of the great Ukiyo-e tradition, with prints of actors, historical scenes, cityscapes, and popular narrative compositions.

    His late Edo yakusha-e are highly sought after today.

    This print depicts a kabuki actor in the role of Minamoto Kurô Yoshitsune, also known as Minamoto no Yoshitsune. A major figure in medieval Japan, Yoshitsune was a famous warrior of the Minamoto clan, a hero of the Genpei War.

    He remains in the Japanese imagination as a brilliant, courageous, and tragic strategist, celebrated in literature, Noh theater, Kabuki, and Ukiyo-e prints.

    The composition highlights a powerful stage portrait: a concentrated face, theatrical hairstyle, sword, armor, and a blue costume richly decorated with Japanese motifs. The details of the kimono, the shades of indigo, and the presence of the fan, illustrating the series, are superb!

    The series Kotoba no hana hiraku suehiro, "Fans opening with flowery words," combines actor portraits, visual poetry, and references to Kabuki theater. Here, the image unites the strength of the warrior hero with a refined layout of the late Edo period.

    Condition:

    Very good overall condition for an original print from 1867. Slight wear and small flaws along the edges. Blue colors very well preserved.

    We love this original print by Utagawa Kuniteru II, a very beautiful yakusha-e: a kabuki actor, a legendary samurai hero, a blue costume, and a true theatrical presence! The role of Yoshitsune adds a superb historical dimension. Special mention for the Kimono and its magnificent blue!
