    This print depicts the moment when Tanizawa Tanomo, a tragic samurai, prepares to perform seppuku (切腹), the ultimate honor ritual reserved for warriors.
    Kneeling, his face calm and resolute, he prepares to disembowel himself, holding his sword by the blade, a symbol of truth and loyalty in the bushido ethic.
    The handwritten sheets scattered at his feet seem to contain his last letter, or a confession addressed to his lord.
    Behind him, a magnificent folding screen adorned with clouds and guardian lions (shishi), symbols of protection and courage, frames the scene.

    Kuniyoshi stages the essence of kabuki here: the dramatic tension of an extreme moment, contained within a posture imbued with dignity.
