    🎭 Play

小袖曽我薊色縫(こそでそがあざみのいろぬい)– Kosode Soga Azami no Iro-nui
    — performed at the Ichimura-za (市村座) theater in Edo, 2nd month of 1859 (Ansei 6 era).

    Characters depicted

Right: Kawarazaki Gonjūrō I (初代 河原崎権十郎) in the role of Yaegaki Monzō (八重垣紋三)
Left: Sawamura Tosshō II (二代目 沢村訥升) in the role of Kageyama Shigenojō (蔭山繁之丞)

    🏮 Subject

Scene from Kawatake Mokuami's play, Kosode Soga Azami no Iro-nui (1858–1859), a drama combining revenge, crime, and honor.
This diptych illustrates the moment when Yaegaki Monzō confronts Kageyama Shigenojō: the two samurai face each other, ready to cross swords, in a silent tension.

The background depicts a Buddhist statue, symbolizing fate and moral judgment: the warrior's honor confronting destiny.
Toyokuni III demonstrates his mastery of actor portraiture — intense expressions, kimono folds, perfect dramatic balance.

    🦝 Our opinion

We love Yaegaki's kimono and the black background with the wood grain showing through in the print. This scene is very well composed with the tension of the characters contrasting with the Buddha in the background. A magnificent work by the master of Kabuki!
