    Print type: Genji-e and fūzoku-ga 風俗画, an image inspired by the world of The Tale of Genji and depicting the customs, pastimes, and scenes of daily life of its era.

    Technique: polychrome woodblock print nishiki-e 錦絵, with bokashi gradations and dry embossing karazuri.

    Artist: Utagawa Kunisada I 歌川国貞, known as Toyokuni III 三代歌川豊国. Signed Toyokuni ga 豊国画 in a toshidama cartouche.

    Publication date: 1852, sixth month of Kaei 5, Edo period.

    Publisher: Tsutaya Kichizō 蔦屋吉蔵, Kōeidō 紅英堂 publishing house.

    Censor seals: nanushi censors: Fuku 福 & Muramatsu 村松 + zodiacal date: Rat 6.

    About Utagawa Kunisada, Toyokuni III:

    Utagawa Kunisada, 1786–1865, is one of the greatest masters of ukiyo-e from the Edo period. A student of Toyokuni I and a major figure in the Utagawa school, he adopted the name Toyokuni and is known as Toyokuni III.

    A very popular artist during his lifetime, Kunisada was extremely prolific and excelled in yakusha-e kabuki actor portraits, bijin-ga, fashion scenes, literary illustrations, and the world of Genji. His work is distinguished by expressive characters, sumptuous textiles, refined colors, and remarkable attention to the customs of Edo society.

    Subject:

    This print depicts a spring boat festival, organized for hanami 花見, the contemplation of cherry blossoms. A noble samurai, recognizable by his chonmage hairstyle and opulent kimono, comfortably settles aboard a richly decorated pleasure boat.

    In front of him, an elegant tea set accompanies the banquet. Teapot, cups, containers, and small accessories highlight the refinement of this seasonal outing.

    In the background, islets planted with pine trees and cherry trees form a superb garden. A stone lantern appears between the trees, enhancing the aristocratic and poetic atmosphere of the scene. Kunisada here transports the pleasures of spring nobles into a world inspired by Genji.

    The magnificent kimono is one of the highlights of the work.

    The beautiful bokashi create subtle gradations in the sky and water. On the cherry blossoms, delicate karazuri, inkless embossed prints, add relief to the petals and discreetly capture the light. These details demonstrate the great craftsmanship of the artisans involved in printing.

    Condition:

    Good overall condition for a work from 1852. Paper slightly yellowed by age, with some foxing stains mainly visible in the margins. Very beautiful, vibrant, and well-preserved colors. Margins and seals entirely present. Small irregularities and slight damage on the edges, consistent with the age of the work. Old central fold.

    We find several typical elements of our favorite Kunisada Toyokuni III: a refined scene, a spectacular kimono, a poetic spring landscape, and a palette dominated by magnificent blues (our favorite color in prints!).

    A superb piece for a collector of ukiyo-e, a hanami or Genji fan, or simply a lover of authentic Edo period Japanese art.
