    The print depicts Kusatsu-juku, a key station at the junction of two major historical roads of the Edo period:

    • The Kisokaidō (also called Nakasendō), an inland road crossing the mountains of central Japan.
    • The Tōkaidō, a coastal road connecting Edo (Tokyo) to Kyoto.

    Kusatsu-juku was the 68th station on the Nakasendō and the 52nd on the Tōkaidō, a bustling crossroads. Today it is located in the heart of Kusatsu city, Shiga Prefecture.

    The print shows a scene of daily life: travelers in kimono and kasa hats, an elegant woman, porters carrying bundles of firewood, and a peaceful rural landscape. In the background, the traditional roofs of the inns (honjin), framed by pines and mountains, attest to the welcoming atmosphere of this important stopover.

    • Re-edition by Hōdō Shuppan, known for its faithful reproductions of Edo period originals (with censor and publisher seals identical to the original)
    • Vibrant colors, quality craftsmanship: subtle gradations (bokashi), fine lines and embossing.
