    This print is among the most striking landscapes of the Grand Tōkaidō. Hiroshige depicts Sakanoshita, a relay station located near the Suzuka Pass, facing the spectacular Mount Fudesute. The landscape completely dominates the scene and gives an impression of almost dizzying depth.

    To the right, travelers stop at a roadside tea house, while an ox laden with luggage advances, accompanied by walkers. The tiny figures emphasize the immensity of the mountains. The contrast between the daily life of the Tōkaidō and the almost unreal rocky mass gives the image an atmosphere that is both peaceful and grand.

    The name Fudesute, literally "throw away one's brush," refers to an ancient legend: a painter from the Kanō school was said to have been so impressed by the beauty of the site that he abandoned his brushes, despairing of being able to reproduce it. Hiroshige meets this challenge here with a remarkable composition, playing on empty spaces, mist, and bokashi gradations to bring forth the mountain.

    Through this travel scene, Hiroshige therefore does not only show a Tōkaidō relay station. He stages the contemplation of a landscape reputed to be impossible to paint, and transforms a real place into an almost poetic vision.

    Condition:

    Print in very good condition. Vibrant colors, good print quality, typical of a carefully executed Shōwa reissue. No creases, tears, or wormholes.

    We particularly like the contrast between the small travelers, the tea house, and the immense Fudesute mountain, which gives this print its full power. The bokashi gradations and the style of Mount Fudesute, reminiscent of traditional Japanese paintings, are superb!

    A very beautiful Japanese Shōwa reissue, authentic and carefully printed, ideal for lovers of ukiyo-e, Japanese landscapes, the Tōkaidō, or simply Hiroshige's poetic universe.
