Title: Nagoya Sanzaburō (名古屋山三郎)
Subject:
The print depicts Ichimura Uzaemon XII, a famous kabuki actor, in the role of Nagoya Sanzaburō (名古屋山三郎), a character from the play Mukashigatari inazuma zōshi (昔語稲妻帖), performed at the Ichimura-za theatre in 1848.
This kabuki play belongs to a popular tradition of revenge and romance stories, much appreciated during the Edo period. Nagoya Sanzaburō is depicted here in a dynamic pose, katana drawn, kimono tied for battle, probably in a moment of dramatic tension.
Notable details:
The character's purple kimono is decorated with swallows in full flight, a rare and highly symbolically delicate choice (swallows often evoke fidelity and constancy in Japanese prints). His obi and weapons are finely adorned with floral and geometric patterns, and the background features cherry and wisteria branches, signs of spring.
Condition: Original period print in good overall condition considering its age.
➕ Well-preserved colors. No collage.
➖ Paper shows visible creases, small stains in the lower part.
🦝 Our opinion:
A rare print by Kuniyoshi, one of today's most sought-after Ukiyo-e masters – especially for his powerful yakusha-e and iconic compositions. The actor's pose gives great energy to the scene.
The unique charm of this engraving lies in the kimono with swallows, both original and delicate.
It is an expressive and precious piece, emblematic of Kuniyoshi's virtuosity in the art of dramatic portraiture.
Kuniyoshi's graphic audacity continues to fascinate collectors. We offer other original works in our collection of ukiyo-e prints.
