This fan was created for the 300th anniversary of Mitsukoshi 三越, one of Japan's most famous brands. Mitsukoshi is not just a department store: it's a historic establishment, founded in Edo in 1673 under the name Echigoya, originally specializing in textiles and kimonos. Over time, it became a true Japanese institution, associated with refinement, beautiful objects, fashion, kimonos, and urban lifestyle.
On the front, we discover a Japanese woman in a kimono, with a gentle face, traditional hairstyle adorned with kushi and kanzashi. She herself holds a sensu, a folding Japanese fan. The colors are very charming: blue, turquoise, deep black in the hair, small red and green touches in the ornaments. The ensemble evokes the world of bijin-ga, those images of beautiful Japanese women found in prints and decorative objects.
On the back, the red inscription reads:
創業三百年
Sōgyō sanbyaku-nen
300 years since its founding
Inside the circle, it reads:
三越
Mitsukoshi
Thus, we have a Japanese commemorative object, for the occasion of the 300th anniversary of this great establishment. This is also what makes its charm: it's not a luxurious object, but a popular, promotional item, designed to be used, kept, hung, collected. A small piece of commercial and elegant Shōwa-era Japan.
🦝 Our opinion:
A very beautiful Mitsukoshi uchiwa with the blend we love at KOGEDO: a lovely everyday object, a Shōwa Japanese aesthetic, and a hidden history. Perfect for wall decor, a corner dedicated to vintage Japan, or simply for cooling off with class in the summer heat!
