Description:
This vintage Japanese uchiwa fan is an advertising medium for the Obitsu Chamber of Commerce 小櫃商工會, in Chiba prefecture. The back bears the inscription 福うちわ Fuku Uchiwa, "lucky fan", accompanied by the number 1244 and a list of participating businesses. It served as both a promotional item, an entry ticket, and a support for a local lottery.
The inscription announces a 抽籤會, commercial lottery, on Thursday, August 18 at Obitsu Elementary School 小櫃小学校. Holders of the Fuku Uchiwa entered for free and enjoyed other entertainment. The fan was obtained from Umeya Shōten 梅屋商店, in Mita, whose stamp indicates the old local number "Obitsu telephone 27".
On the front, an elegant post-war style woman wears a Western blouse, jewelry, and a wristwatch. The portrait is in the style of Japanese advertising graphics of the 1950s, with geometric shapes and dynamic composition. The inscriptions 毎度有難う and 信用で売れる店 thank customers and highlight the trust placed in the business.
The date of Thursday, August 18, the graphic style, the short telephone numbering, and the old forms of kanji lead to a very probable dating of 1955 or perhaps 1960.
🦝 Our opinion:
We are absolutely delighted with this post-war Shōwa atmosphere. The 1950s bijin (female beauty) style is fantastic, and this fan tells a real story that we were able to trace!
