This Japanese uchiwa fan comes from one of Japan's most famous brands: Mitsukoshi 三越. Mitsukoshi is not just a department store; it is a historic house, established in Edo in 1673 under the name Echigoya, originally specializing in textiles and kimonos. Over time, it became a true Japanese institution, associated with refinement, beautiful objects, fashion, kimonos, and urban living. The Mitsukoshi red seal is found on the back of the fan.
On the front, the design depicts a bijin, a beautiful Japanese woman. Her pale face, long black hair, small red mouth, and a few touches of color give the whole a very gentle, almost mysterious atmosphere. There are few elements, but precisely: everything relies on the gaze, the line of the face, and the long hair.
This bijin is not depicted in an old Edo style, but rather in a modern 20th-century aesthetic, close to the spirit of shin-hanga. These modern Japanese prints took classic themes, such as bijin-ga, giving them a more intimate, refined, and sometimes almost cinematic sensibility. This uchiwa is not a print, of course, but it shares something with it: the calm, the elegance of the lines, the luminous face against a soft background.
This is an old Japanese promotional item, but in the best sense of the term: an object designed to circulate, be used, given, and kept. The Mitsukoshi branding remains on the back, almost secret, while the front retains all its decorative power.
🦝 Our opinion:
A very chic Mitsukoshi uchiwa, with a calm charm that we adore. The bijin portrait in the shin-hanga spirit makes it a beautiful Japanese decorative object, perfect for a collection of antique fans, a Japan-inspired wall, or a corner dedicated to Shōwa Japan. And above all, it will cool you down during the summer heat!
