    Description:

    This antique Japanese uchiwa fan has a commercial inscription on the back from Moriyama 守山町, Shiga Prefecture 滋賀縣. It mentions the name Yoshii Yasuzō 吉井 安三, most likely that of the merchant. The text seems to correspond to a general store, a wholesaler, who distributed this uchiwa as advertising. This type of fan was useful, decorative, and intended to circulate the name of a business daily.

    On the front, the decoration blends wavy grayish-green shapes with silver spray creating a swirling motion. Hanabi 花火 motifs, Japanese fireworks, appear in blue and gold on the white background. The overall effect evokes a lively summer sky.

    The silver appears to have been spray-applied, likely with stencils, a stencil, or a process similar to airbrushing. This technique provides an irregular grain and soft transitions, typical of a modern aesthetic from the early 20th century. The bamboo handle has a reddish-brown lacquered finish, glossy in places.

    Estimated from the 1920s to 1950s, this uchiwa belongs to the late Taishō or early Shōwa era.

    🦝 Our opinion:

    A rather old uchiwa, possibly almost a hundred years old! Its silver lines and hanabi immediately evoke Japanese summer evenings. Its old Moriyama inscription, its patinated handle, and its decoration make it a beautiful Japanese collector's item, perfect on a wall or as part of a Japan-inspired decor. And it can still accompany you on hot days!
