The Artisan: Satō Sashima 佐藤佐志馬 (1907–1985)

Born on February 19, 1907, in Noji Onsen (Fukushima Prefecture), Satō Sashima was a major figure of the Tsuchiyu school. Trained in woodturning at a very young age by his father, Satō Yoshikichi, he developed a highly technical style. After World War II, he devoted himself fully to making kokeshi, perfecting a personal style renowned for its finesse and precision, especially in the drawing of his fringes. He trained many disciples and presided over the Tsuchiyu Woodcarving Association for many years. He passed away in 1985 at the age of 79. Critic Shikama Tokio called him "the champion of the Tsuchiyu kokeshi school."

    Aesthetic Details:

This large kokeshi features a peaceful face with half-closed eyes, typical of Tsuchiyu. It showcases the characteristic technique of "whale eyes" (kujira-me) which Sashima perfected in the 1960s, giving his kokeshi a more lively and intense expression, in contrast to the general softness of the Tsuchiyu style. The fringe, executed with extreme precision, gives the doll a soft and balanced expression typical of his work.

    🦝 We love:

A large and rare master kokeshi, in a sought-after 37.5cm size, perfect for brightening up any interior! We really love Satō Sashima's iconic simple yet very refined style.
