The artisan Kamata Kōichi (鎌田孝市, 1925–2004)

Kamata Kōichi was born on February 10, 1925, in Shiroishi, Miyagi Prefecture. The eldest son of Kamata Bunichi, he began his apprenticeship with his father around 1939 and created his first kokeshi.

After his mobilization during the war, he returned to Shiroishi in 1945 and resumed woodworking. From the 1960s, he studied the forms created by his father and developed successful interpretations. His wife Umeko, his daughter Etsuko, and his son Takashi participated in the production. After Bunichi's death, he became the guardian of this tradition until his own passing in 2004.

    Description

This Yajirō-kei kokeshi beautifully illustrates the work of Kamata Kōichi, with its straight silhouette, quite rare in the Yajiro style, and its rounded head. Its delicate face combines long arched eyebrows, peaceful eyes in the hitoe-mabuta (single eyelid) style, a cat-nose nekobana, and a small smiling mouth, giving the doll a serene and mischievous expression.

The body features a kasane-giku 重ね菊 motif, composed of overlapping chrysanthemums painted in red on the natural wood. Repeated vertically with regularity, this emblematic decoration of the Kamata family highlights the height of the piece. Red rings at the neck and base structure the whole.

The hairstyle is crowned with a janome 蛇の目 (snake eye) motif with concentric red and black circles. The black band, the side ornaments, and the fine painted hair on the back complete this typical decoration. The kokeshi is signed under the base by the artisan.

    🦝 Our opinion:

A beautiful and large Yajirō, full of sweetness! Its original straight body and red kasane-giku motif beautifully highlight the light wood. Its face is very well crafted. And above all, we love its small hairs at the back of its head: a discreet, funny, and endearing detail! A magnificent signed piece for collectors and lovers of Japanese folk art.
