The artisan: Niiyama Hisashirō (新山久城, 1942-2008)

Born on February 17, 1942, in Fukuoka-mura Yajirō, Katta District, Niiyama Hisashirō was the eldest son of Niiyama Hisashi. After Fukuoka Junior High School in Shiroishi, he learned woodworking from his father.

Around 1958, he began creating kokeshi inspired by the ancient model of his grandfather Niiyama Hisaji. He worked for a long time in the family workshop, then moved to his own home in Yajirō Higashi in 1981.

In 1982, he took on Yokoyama Mizuki as an apprentice and taught him woodturning for two years. An artist, farmer, and city councilor, he continued to turn kokeshi until around 2006.

His work is fully in line with the Yajirō tradition, recognizable by its large round heads, graphic decorations, bold colors, and compositions painted with direct energy.

    Details:

This large Yajirō kokeshi first impresses with its 46 cm size and its tall, balanced silhouette. The round head features janome patterns (蛇の目), typical concentric circles, associated with an expressive red fringe.

The face, soft and mischievous, features half-closed eyes, finely arched smiling brows, a small brush-drawn nose, and a discreet mouth. Black strands frame the face.

The body represents a kimono, alternating red bands, green touches, thin lines, and purple rings.

    🦝 We love:

A very large signed Yajirō kokeshi, made by an important artisan of the Niiyama lineage, in the purest traditional style and making quite an impression!

For those, like us, who love impressive kokeshi, this one is for you!
